Saltonstall, MCKA

Ellen Saltonstall began her practice of Kinetic Awareness in 1971, studying with Elaine Summers and dancing in the Elaine Summers Dance and Film Company. At the same time she became a licensed massage therapist, and also studied modern dance and Iyengar Yoga. In 1992 she began her study with John Friend, the originator of Anusara Yoga, and she became a certified Anusara yoga teacher in 2000. She is also an ongoing student of anatomist Thomas Myers.

Her specialty is anatomy and the therapeutic applications of yoga and ballwork. She has extensive experience working with issues such as arthritis, osteoporosis, menopause, fertility, musculoskeletal pain, and repetitive strain injuries. She teaches webinars on various therapeutic topics with YogaUOnline.

In 1983 Ellen wrote and published the first book on Kinetic Awareness® titled Kinetic Awareness; Discovering Your Bodymind.  She continues to teach this method in her therapeutic classes, and to train teachers to use the work with clients. She teaches classes and privates in her studio in NYC, as well as teacher trainings and workshops locally and internationally. Yoga students find the KA work to be immediately enjoyable and beneficial, helping them to open the body in a profound yet practical way.

With Dr. Loren Fishman, Ellen has co-authored two books on therapeutic yoga published by WW Norton:  Yoga for Arthritis (2008) and Yoga for Osteoporosis (2010). She is working on an anatomy book for yoga practitioners, and has several other books in planning stages.

What is Anusara Yoga?
Anusara Yoga is an integrated approach to Hatha Yoga in which the expression of the human spirit is interwoven with attention to precise principles of physical alignment and action. The practice of Anusara Yoga can be quite gentle or more vigorous, but always with an intention to connect with the heart.
As we perform the asanas, we open to our own greatness, we deepen our knowledge of body, mind and spirit, and we playfully celebrate the flow of life.
Using a concise set of physical principles alignment that apply to all poses and to everyday activities, Anusara Yoga is very effective as therapy for injuries or chronic body problems, and also as a way to maintain a state of health that is both strong and joyfully expansive. What is Kinetic Awareness®?
Kinetic Awareness® is a bodywork system which is complementary to yoga practice. KA techniques release chronically tight areas of the body, enhance awareness and breath and facilitate greater range of motion. The unique feature of KA is the use of rubber balls (of varying sizes and textures) to support, massage and stretch localized areas. The result is a wonderful feeling of lightness in the body and alert quietness in the mind.

 Therapeutics
Therapeutics classes begin with Kinetic Awareness®
done individually, with instruction and guidance as needed. The second half of the class is Anusara Yoga done as a group with poses adapted for therapeutics.
Students of any level with any type of injury or chronic condition are welcome, and prior consultation by phone is recommended for acute conditions.

Private Sessions
Private sessions are available by appointment. If you have an injury or condition that requires special care, or if you want to go at your own pace, private sessions can help you develop a practice that fits your individual needs. These sessions can include any combination of Anusara Yoga and Kinetic
Awareness®.

Workshops
I offer periodic workshops on therapeutics for Lower Back, Shoulders and Neck, Hips and Knees. These workshops include both Anusara Yoga and Kinetic
Awareness®. Please check my website www.mohiniyoga.com for upcoming workshops.
